Did you watch the Miss America Pageant Saturday night? Yes, I know that event no longer has the significance it did in my childhood and teen years (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), but I have watched it since childhood, and it remains a favorite.
Interestingly enough, SEVEN of the Top 15 Finalists were from States in our Great Southwest District? We were represented by young ladies from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, California, and Hawaii.
Although Miss Virginia was the big winner, we can be proud that young ladies from our states are associated with beauty, grace, poise, confidence, and other virtues. Miss California was the First Runner-Up, and Miss Louisiana was the Third Runner-Up.
I was disappointed that Miss Oklahoma was eliminated before she got to display her talent, after being announced as the very first finalist. It probably didn't help that she tripped on the steps when coming out on stage in her evening gown. (No jokes, please, about Okies not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time!) I see in today's paper that she won the $6,000 Qualify of Life award given to the contestant judged to excel most in volunteerism and community service, so all is not lost.
This has absolutely nothing to do with IAAP, but I thought it was interesting, and we all need a distraction occasionally. (Don't we?)
